Day 719 - From the highlands to the lowlands

We said our goodbye to Mt Kinabalu this morning (vowing to return to conquer her when we have the money to be able to!) and set off towards the coast and closer to the jungle where we plan to explore tomorrow. While the scenery on the bus was really awesome, it was often Palm Oil plantations lining the road - they're not unattractive trees but it makes it blatantly clear how much rain forest has been lost.

We jumped off the bus in Sepilok and found ourselves at Uncle Tans - not planned but it worked out well as they have great sounding 2 night 3 day jungle experience that we'd love to do.
As soon as we had lunch we jumped on another local bus to take us into Sandakan on the coast where we got some money from the ATM and some mozzie repellent for our foray into the jungle: reportedly home to millions of the little buggers.

Back at Uncle Tans a number of the staff were having drinks and playing pool, and were keen to chat away with us in between singing and playing the guitar. As usual Adam found it hard to say no to trying something new - and joined in drinking the local brew over a few games of pool.

Adlibing it to Uncle Tans.
