Day 711 - Jungle-berry

After feeding our roti addiction (not to mention the kopi-O: super strong and sweet local coffee) we ignored the ominous layers of mist and cloud smothering the mountains and jungle we had decided to explore today. Basically we didn't get enough of slipping our way through Malaysia's jungle yesterday (and we needed another taste of home) so we set off for more adventure bright and early this morning.
Today we set off for trail 5 which turned out to be just as beautiful as yesterday but a lot easier! We wandered under the jungle canopy spurred on by the sing-songs of the resident birds. A black and white bird's song stood out as it fluttered from rock to rock up the river that we continually criss-crossed throughout the day.

You have to have good eyes to spot Liv in the jungle:
Our time in the jungle was consumed by an endless array of plants from huge banana trees sprouting fruit, towering tree ferns, small fungus housing pools of fresh water, as well as tiny little patches of colour amongst the green when a flower managed to make its presence felt. We verged off the main trail in search of Pitcher Plants, only found in Japan and Malaysia, and were stoked to actually find them - people here pay big bucks to go on guided tours to find these!
Once the trail joined onto trail 3 the walking got a lot tougher - we probably should have read about this trail (and trail 2 we joined onto later) a bit more to prepare ourselves for the up-and-downs and cliff-like steps we had to negotiate in the dampness of the jungle. Although we didn't see any monkeys, Adam did enough monkeying around!!
At the end we were rewarded by coming out at a large Chinese temple where we spent a while checking out the golden Buddhas and massive fish in the rock pools.
After the temple our bellies decided it was time for lunch, and so we continued the Chinese theme by diverging from our Indian cuisine of the last few days. From here we walked up the road to a strawberry farm where we wandered through the colourful crops and eventually couldn't resist indulging in a fresh strawberry, ice-cream, cream sundae!
As if we hadn't indulged enough we stopped in at Strawberry Moment for a taste of strawberry coffee and cake as well as scoring a belly fool of tasters from the shop: strawberry cookies and chocolate, dried strawberry, as well as some unique things like dried flower that we can't remember the name of and yam cookies.

Over the last few months in South East Asia we have found that they really make everything accessible to tourists to the point of it being too easy and a bit boring - we feel like we haven't caught a local bus in months! This afternoon though we rectified this situation by rolling back into town on a local bus in control of a super friendly conductor!
We met up with Sean and Wendy for dinner - though a few hours later than planned as the rain poured down the minute we got back to the guesthouse!! It was sad to say goodbye, but it's likely we'll catch up with our friends in Bali in June. Till then ...
Adlibing Strawberry sundaes.
