Day 585 - Marble Jain Temples

The main reason we came to Mt Abu was to visit the Delwara Temples - some of the most famous Jain temples in India. As is probably clear from the comments about the Jain temples we visited a couple of days ago, Jain temples are known for the phenomenal works of stone art - usually marble like the ones we visited today. We were not allowed to take photos, but this just allowed our eyes to absorb even more. By the end, our necks ached from staring at the ceilings - we can't imagine how the masons who took more than 15 years to carve some of the temples survived!!!

As we made our way along the 3km road we were shaded by numerous palm trees that lined the mountainside and indicate we're getting closer and closer to the tropical south. We made a steep excursion up to Adhar Devi, a Hindu temple inside a series of caves, which you had to crawl into!! It was an extremely peaceful place, hard to believe we were still in India it was so quiet!

We also quickly popped into the Om Shanti Bhawan, the International Headquarters of Brahma Kumaris - this is a spiritual / religious sect that believes in all world religions, or something like that!
We continued our slow wander towards town by following the lake towards our hotel, gazing up at the Toad Rock - the big rock that strangely enough looks like a toad about to jump into the lake!

In the evening we found food, after which we went to bed - exciting stuff!!

Adlibing marble magic.
