Day 581 - Dashing to the desert

Starting the day in a stingy kind of way we ignored all the rickshaws wanting to start their own day ripping of tourists, and made the 2km walk to the bus station. We normally find the long buses throughout India particularly boring - and most of today's trip was no exception, however there were a few interesting things we noticed along the way.

The first classic image that pops to mind were the 2 army officers we saw decked out in all their army fatigues walking along the main road holding hands. We're sure this is something you'd never see back home, but is very common here. Even though you never see a man and woman holding hands (even if married) it's common for men to not only hold hands, but also drape their arms over one another kind of like a cuddle, like the 2 smiling teenagers we saw cycling along the desert road!

The further West we head in Rajasthan the more desert-like the scenery becomes, and today it seemed the desert popped out of nowhere as golden sand dunes and then fumbled around trying to make up its mind: on one side of the road were lush cropped fields, and on the other sandy / rocky land with the occasional scrub gracing its surface.

As soon as we arrived in Jaisalmer we had hordes of rickshaw drivers crowding around to take us into town, but as usual we decided to stretch our legs and walk instead. It's much nicer walking around these days after the huge pack downsize!!
In the evening we walked a bit through the old town, in the shadow of the sandy Jaisalmer Fort, and down to the small lake where we joined the Indian tourists feeding the ugly catfish - which is supposed to the good lucky!! We ended up saving most of the bread we bought and feeding it to the skinny dogs on the way home. Before we left to go home we had to use our hands to close our dropped jaws after a rainbow colours flowed from the sky to the lake.Adlibing a lake sunset.
