Day 579 - Eagle eye Meherangarh Fort

As our current accommodation is basically a windowless box, we woke rather late today thanks to our pitch black room! We had brekky on the roof where we strained our necks looking up at the looming Mehrangarh Fort that we soon set off to explore. As we made our way through the lanes that lead from our hotel to the fort we slowly climbed higher and higher, which made us realise just how high above the city this amazing fort sits.
Inside the fort we got yet another experience with an audio tour, but were actually quite impressed as we learnt a lot about the history of this fort that was home to generations of Jodhpur Maharajas and their families, as well as the legion of soldiers there to protect the city.
It was an amazing sight from the top of the fort, where we got phenomenal views over the city including of the blue old city, the new Maharaja's Palace, the clock tower and a marble memorial. All major landmarks dispersed amongst the sprawling city below. The major highlight of this visit was the way the entire fort was carved so delicately - almost a bit strange that a defense building was made so beautiful. It is also pretty astonishing that it was built in the 15th Century and has withstood countless wars and cannonball attacks, and still remains imposingly elegant. In the afternoon we went back to the markets for another look, where we sat in the midst of it all drinking freshly squeezed juice and the specialty makhania lassi famous in Jodhpur - an enticingly spiced variation on the nationwide yoghurt drink. This time we did make a few purchases, but of the perishable kind (oranges and bananas) that will hopefully get rid of the cold we're fighting off right now!!

As night set in we headed back to our rooftop already resigned to the fact we can't find cheap food anywhere close, and have to fall victim to the guesthouse food - which while not bad, is relatively expensive.

Adlibing a fantastic fort.
