Day 582 - Yet another Fort

We were woken this morning by the deafening roar of jet planes flying high above us - Jaisalmer is a strategic military zone, due to it proximity to the Pakistan border, which may explain the large number of convoys we saw heading this way on our bus ride yesterday.

Awoken we went to the lassi man we found stashed in a corner yesterday for an amazing lassi and some brekky before wandering straight through the fort gates to have a nosy round. We made a brief foray into the majestic Palace, well, as far as the ticket counter where we decided that we weren't going to shell out more money to look at another fort museum - especially as we can explore the rest of the fort without needing a ticket.

We seemed to start the first part of our wander by following other people to the big cannon where there were stunning views out over the horizon with the sprawling flat-roofed city below. At one stage Adam managed to find a hidden entry to the fort's wall where 99 bastions sit and we spent a while ambling around the edge looking through the gaps in the defensive wall out to the city and desert beyond.

After lunch and some wandering around town trying to find a local bus to a small town tomorrow (we found out there weren't any!) we spent some time really dawdling through town taking in all that makes up an Indian Bazaar!
We found ourselves back at the Gadi lake and made our way to a high point that gave us a view over the entire fort. We also visited a Haveli (amazing carved house) - the one we visited is 300 years old and used to belong to the Prime Minister of the area. Here we were rewarded with amazing views and intricate carving of the building turning golden in the setting sun that blows the mind!!

From our watchtower as the day turned to night we stared into a still darkness, the town sleeping and at its focal pont the Jaisalmer Fort glowing bright.

Adlibing golden sandstone structures.
