Day 555 - Relaxing on the roof

Noise is a part of Asia, so waking to the unbelievable amount of commotion that was going on this morning was not something new to us, plus the adlibing travels we've had over the last year and counting have put us in a pretty good position to accept the reality that the noise will never go away!

Though the noise prevented us from a lazy day in bed we did manage to find our way up to the roof top restaurant on our hotel where we spent most of the day reading and eating. Our hotel is about 50 metres back from the mighty Ganges river and we have a stunning view out over the town of Varanasi (well as far as the fog will allow) looking over the edge we see that this town not only lives by the flow of the river but also the height of windy roof tops! Kids everywhere are flying kites that battle for air space with people training pigeons and parrots, and monkeys that clamber over their concrete jungle. Admist the kids are fathers going about restoration of the ancient-looking buildings but in reality they're only a few hundred years old. In the meantime mothers tend to washing and babies oblivious to their children walking along the narrow-edged roof tops - something that would give mums back home a heart attack.
In the afternoon we did something very touristy and un-touristy at the same time: we caught a bicycle-rickshaw to the hospital, where ... you don't need the details. We spent some time sitting in a park inside the University watching peacocks and being approached by an old man who wanted us to eat leaves!

Hunger drove us to a restaurant where we dined while being entertained by traditional Indian music and then once again found ourselves lost in the dark maze of alleyways that make up Varanasi.

Adlibing a roof top.
