For lunch Adam tucked into the meat and onion pastries that are found all over Central Asia, while Liv ate deep-fried bread ... While eating our food we enjoyed the red-rocked mountainous scenery.
Back in the stifling car, we were compensated by the views when we began rolling around the stunning Issyk Kol, which is 170km long and 70km wide and is the second largest alpine lake in the world. Issyk Kol means 'warm lake' because it never freezes because of thermal activity and salt levels.
Driving around the lake we were awestruck by the beautiful deep blue colour and the mountains flanking its shores and we wished that we had time to stop and laze on one of the many beaches. We made it to Karakol around 5pm, and bumped into some French travellers who pointed us in the direction of a guesthouse, and once we had our bags down we went straight out in search of food to take into the mountains tomorrow. All the stores stock the same things, and it's not exactly what we'd call hiking food, but we managed to get some noodles, soup mix, bread, tomato sauce, cheese, chocolate and canned corn - enough to survive on for the next three days anyway!
We headed out for dinner which was tasty, the only hitch being Liv's vege meal which came with 'only a little meat'!! After we sent it back they tried to get us to pay for it - normally Adam would have just eaten the meal but our waitress spoke English and we had spent ages telling her that NO meat is ok, not even a little bit, so we didn't feel like we should pay! We headed home and spent some time taking every last item of weight that we didn't need out of our packs to leave at the guesthouse while we're up in the mountains for the next 3 days.
Adlibing it past the lake to Karakol.
